چکیده

This paper documents an instrument-building course codeveloped by the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Department of Music at Yale University. The course focuses on the fundamentals of musical acoustics, electronic sound production, and instrument design through traditional lecture-based learning as well as a hands-on experimentation and building. The structure of the course, the primary pedagogical objectives, the facilities, and examples of final projects realized by the students are discussed.

Bridging the Gap Between Art and Science Education Through Teaching Electronic Musical Instrument Design

Electronic Musical Instrument Design is an excellent vehicle for bringing students from multiple disciplines together to work on projects, and help bridge the perennial gap between the arts and the sciences. This paper describes how at Tufts University, a school with no music technology program, students from the engineering (electrical, mechanical, and computer), music, performing arts, and vi...

Classification of Iranian traditional musical modes (DASTGÄH) with artificial neural network

The concept of Iranian traditional musical modes, namely DASTGÄH, is the basis for the traditional music system. The concept introduces seven DASTGÄHs. It is not an easy process to distinguish these modes and such practice is commonly performed by an experienced person in this field. Apparently, applying artificial intelligence to do such classification requires a combination of the basic infor...

Music Instrument Identification Using MFCC: Erhu as an Example

In the analysis of musical acoustics, we usually use the power spectrum to describe the difference between timbres from two music instruments. However, according to our experiments, the power spectrum cannot be used as effective features for erhu instrument identification. In this paper, we use MFCC (mel-scale frequency cepstral coefficients) as features for music instrument identification usin...

An Accurate Timbre Model for Musical Instruments and its Application to Classification

A compact, general and accurate model of the timbral characteristics of musical instruments can be used as a source of a priori knowledge for music content analysis applications such as transcription and instrument classification, as well as for source separation. We develop a timbre model based on the spectral envelope that meets these requirements and relies on additive analysis, Principal Co...

Acoustical properties of ancient Chinese musical bells

Ancient Chinese music bells can be traced back to the Shang dynasty (1600–1100 B.C.). In addition to their significance in history and metallurgy, they provide much insight into the design of musical instruments in the early years and continue to make important contribution to acoustics due to their unique acoustical properties and rich physical mechanisms. These music bells differ from carillo...
